| The Borgata Hotel, Casino and Spa
The Borgata Hotel, Casino and Spa has cultivated stylish inroads in Atlantic City. This popular gambling destination of the Jersey shore had not inspired a new hotel/casino in nearly fifteen years prior to the awakening of the Borgata.
Atlantic City’s Popularity
Atlantic City’s popularity has stagnated somewhat in the last few years. The gambling scene is not as exclusive as it once was. A few decades ago, gamblers had no choice but to vacation in Las Vegas or Atlantic City in order to gamble. Over the last couple of decades though, changes have taken place. Other venues have caught destinations such as Las Vegas and Atlantic City off guard. Buses and carloads from New York, the lower Mid-Atlantic states and the Northeast have not been as plentiful over the last few years. Many Northeasterners can now choose to gamble and play closer to home with attractive and exciting Indian gaming casinos, such as Foxwoods Resorts in Connecticut, an extremely popular gaming destination.
Recently, Atlantic City has struggled to redefine itself. Taking cues from the innovators in Las Vegas, city planners and casino owners have sought to ramp up their businesses, expand their appeal beyond the realm of slot machines and blackjack tables.
Redefining Atlantic City
When the Borgata Hotel, Casino and Spa opened in 2003, it brought innovation, modern design and a decidedly trendy flare to Atlantic City. Not only that, the owners of the Borgata delivered a Las Vegas-style resort. Visitors might not ever see the casino for the rest of the resort’s amenities. The Borgata is, like its Vegas counterparts, a synthesis of the best dining available, stylish events, such as wine tastings and food shows, glitzy casinos with state-of-the-art games and the most exclusive retail shops, not to mention the indulgent spa.
Alongside chef Luke Palladino’s duo of modern Italian restaurants and Susanna Foo’s Asian-French infused restaurant, the Borgata is highlighted by two other upscale alternatives to Atlantic City fare. The Old Homestead Steakhouse is a version of the same popular New York City landmark run by chefs Greg and Marc Sherry. Mixx is a very youthfully trendy Japanese/Cuban fusion from chefs Edwyn Ferrari and Aaron Sanchez. Mixx’s cool and hip interior morphs into an upscale nightclub when dinner is over.
Atlantic City can only hope that the fresh, innovative stylings of the Borgata are only a taste of things to come.
